Crain’s Chicago Business reports Yucaipa Cos. is the leading candidate to buy Dominick’s Finer Foods from Safeway.

Yucaipa would actually be buying Dominick’s back if a deal is struck. The company sold the Chicago-chain to Safeway for $1.8 billion in 1998.

An unidentified Yucaipa spokesperson told Crain’s, “It’s a great company with a great name. If this works out for us again, we’re excited about the opportunity.”

Moderator’s Comment: What are your thoughts on Yucaipa
reacquiring Dominick’s?

If we worked at Dominick’s, we’d wonder how long before
the chain was sold again. If Yucaipa can fix Dominick’s then the company may
have a future deal that meets or exceeds the deal it made with Safeway in 1998.
