Wal-Mart on the Plus Side

By George Anderson

Mary-Kate and Ashley are putting on weight for followers of their fashion merchandise.
Wal-Mart announced yesterday that it will begin selling mary-kateandashley and
Faded Glory apparel in plus sizes at 1300 company stores.

“We realized that the assortment for girls in plus sizes can be limited,” said
Lorie Meyer, Wal-Mart vice president and divisional merchandise manager for
girlswear in a released statement. “We understand that all customers, regardless
of size, want to be fashionable, and we are pleased to increase our offerings
for this young Wal-Mart customer.”

Moderator’s Comment: What are your thoughts on Wal-Mart’s
plus size announcement and the response of retailers in all channels to the
plus size market?

Based on recent information from various health organizations,
it seems plus side apparel is average size by US standards. Perhaps stores should
be emphasizing “minus size” clothes if they’re looking to capture a niche. [George
