Vons Pumps Gas in Vegas

Vons, a division of Safeway, is introducing a combined supermarket, fuel station and convenience store in Las Vegas this week. This will be Vons’ fourth foray into the fuel-service market.

Vons will offer a loyalty card program, the VonsClub card, which gives a discount per gallon on gas purchases. In addition to convenience store and gaming opportunities, Vons will accommodate minor automotive needs. The 2,052-square-foot, six-fuel-pump station and full-service convenience store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Special savings and values will be offered to customers during the grand opening, including a free Select travel mug giveaway to the first 300 customers, and a free 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola with the purchase of eight gallons or more.

Moderator Comment: How big a competitive threat are big box stores (supermarkets, clubs, etc.) with gas pump facilities to convenience/gas stores?

Any competition is a threat and innovation is key to
remaining a destination for consumers. Casey’s, Sheetz, Clark and others are
proving that c/g-stores are not only viable but they have a significant growth
upside. [George Anderson – Moderator]
