The Low-carb Big Time

By George Anderson

Americans are fat and have a plan to lose weight — Dr. Atkin’s plan.

USA Today reports that the low-carb lifestyle has gone mainstream as
millions abandon popular dietary wisdom in search of weight loss via bacon consumption.

Specialty shops (200 and counting) are springing up to cater to these consumers
and major consumer packaged goods manufacturers are getting in on the gold rush
as well.

Even products that are common source of carbohydrates are following trend with
new low-carb versions of bread, rolls and snack products from cookies to ice
cream.

Moderator’s Comment: Are low-carb specialty stores
the next category killer?

We wonder how many consumers like Carolyn Paras-Hutchinson
are out there. She told USA Today, “This place (Castus Low Carb Superstore)
is my salvation. I drove two hours to shop here, and I’ll certainly be back.”
