Supervalu to Downsize Dominick’s

A piece by Jim Kirk in The Chicago Tribune reports Supervalu
may be planning on shuttering 30 or more stores if it is successful in its bid
to takeover Dominick’s Finer Foods. Dominick’s, currently owned by Safeway,
operates 100 stores in the Chicagoland area.


Moderator’s Comment: Does the reported number of stores
Supervalu plans to close if it acquires Dominick’s surprise you?


You’d expect that under-performing stores would close
after the company’s new owner took over. Call us naïve, but we just didn’t
think it would be 30 percent of stores in the case of Dominick’s.
