Sears Sells National Tire & Battery

By George Anderson

Sears has reached an agreement to sell National Tire & Battery (NTB) to TBC Corp., the largest independent tire retailer in the country, for $260 million. In the process,
the Chicago Sun Times reports, the deal will create a new competitor to Sears’ auto center business.

The deal, according to the report, reflects current chief executive Alan Lacy’s emphasis on building the Sears Grand superstore format while moving away from stand-alone specialty
outlets such as NTB.

Moderator’s Comment: What are your thoughts on Sears selling its National Tire & Battery business?

NTB has plenty of room for growth and will probably do that under new management. Sears may find that much of that growth comes at the expense of its remaining
automotive business.
