Sainsbury’s announced that, within seven years, it would only sell wild fish
caught in “sustainable” fisheries.
The Independent reports Sainsbury’s “commitment is significant in view
of mounting alarm at the state of fish stocks, both in EU waters and worldwide.”
Environmentalists welcomed the move although, as The Independent reports, “there
was doubt over the capability of fully accredited ‘sustainable’ fisheries to
meet Sainsbury’s demands.”
Moderator’s Comment: What affect will Sainsbury’s announcement
have on its business? How will it affect other retailers?
