The Myrtle Beach Sun News reports Jackie Nelson’s “Southern Banana Split” was the winner of the Lee’s Inlet Apothecary Soda Jerk Contest on Friday.

The event was part of an anniversary celebration for the Lee’s. It was intended “to bring back fond memories of the soda fountain and the old-time pharmacy,” according to owner
Willie Lee.

Moderator’s Comment: Is the old-fashioned soda fountain/drug store format ready for a revival? What old retailing ideas do you think would play well
with today’s consumer?

The corner store with its fountain and comic books grew up. It’s called Starbucks, Barnes & Noble’s Café, etc. [George
