PublixDirect Goes Offline

By George Anderson

Publix Super Markets announced on Friday it was closing its PublixDirect shopping
service.

Maria Rodamis, a spokesperson for Publix said the decision was made because,
“The service did not have the customers and business to meet the overall expected
volume since opening two years ago.”

“Despite many loyal customers and dedicated associates, PublixDirect simply
didn’t have enough volume to continue this service,” Publix Chief Executive
Charlie Jenkins Jr. said in a statement Friday.

Moderator’s Comment: Why did PublixDirect not work?
What is your assessment of the health of the other online grocers still operating?

PublixDirect did work on many levels as indicated by the
number of customers who are disappointed with the decision to close the division.
It didn’t, however, meet the financial objectives set out for it. The bottom
line rule is the bottom line rules.
