President Dubya Action Figure and Other Toys in Short Supply

By George Anderson

Retailers are finding it hard to keep sufficient inventory on hand to meet the demand for this year’s most popular toy items, says The Associated Press.

FurReal robotic cat, Bratz doll playsets, Chicken Dance Elmo, Kasey the Kinderbot and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are among the hottest sellers.

Kids aren’t the only ones looking for toys this Christmas. The BBC reports that demand is exceeding supply for the talking George W. Bush doll (AKA action figure).

The presidential likeness repeats 17 “Bushisms”. This includes the president’s words following the September 11 terrorist attacks. “Freedom itself was attacked by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended.”

Moderator’s Comment: Two Questions–

  1. Are consumers more accepting of out-of-stocks on
toys at Christmas than they are of shortages in other categories?

  2. What is the impact of out-of-stocks on short and
    long-term store performance?

We want our very own talking president action figure,
if only to hear it say, “You’re working hard to put food on your family.”
