Harris Teeter Looks to Build Capital

By George Anderson

A report in the Washington Business Journal says Harris Teeter is about to sign a deal to place its first store in the nation’s capital.

The store, reportedly, to be located in the Adams Morgan section of the district will be smaller than the typical Teeter location. The 40,000-square-foot Citadel building has
housed a number of entertainment businesses in the past including a concert hall, movie studio and skating rink.

Harris Teeter is looking for other locations within the district in addition to the Adams Morgan property. Grant Ehat, a principal at JBG Rosenfeld who is negotiating with Harris
Teeter on a site said, “They appear to be more aggressive than any other grocer in town right now.”

Moderator’s Comment: What will Harris Teeter’s opening mean for grocers in the Washington, D.C. market?

The Washington, D.C. market leader, Giant Food, appears to be the operator with the most to lose with Harris Teeter’s move into the area. Other operators,
including Trader Joe’s and Wegman’s, are also looking for store space in the metro D.C. area.
