H-E-B Realigns Workforce

By George Anderson

H. E. Butt Grocery announced yesterday it was realigning its organization to add 300 customer service positions in stores while cutting about 100 administrative positions, primarily from its headquarters.

Winell Herron, H-E-B Group vice president of public affairs and diversity, told the San Antonio Express-News, “This is an opportunity to shift to have a more direct impact in the stores. Also, with the advancement in technology, there’s many things we don’t have to do today (that) we needed individuals to do in the past.”

The company plans to meet with the 100 employees slated to be cut to see which ones may qualify for other positions within the organization. Those not being offered other positions will receive outplacement assistance from the supermarket chain.

Moderator’s Comment: What is your reaction to H. E. Butt’s announced employee realignment? Do you see more retailers
shifting personnel resources away from headquarters and field offices to store-level?
