Grocery Store Sales Up Nearly 4%

By George Anderson

The Food Institute, citing Bureau of Census numbers, reports that “During January, sales at the nation’s grocery stores rose 3.9% over the same month of 2002 to $36.6 billion – the largest monthly increase over year earlier levels since last March.”

Moderator’s Comment: What explanation would you give
for this jump in sales in January? Does this represent a positive turning point
in the business or is it simply a blip on the screen?

The number of Super Bowl parties must have been up significantly
this year. [George
