Furor Grows Over Dixie Chick’s Remark
By George Anderson
Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks has apologized for her comments about President Bush but that may not be enough for some.
Ms. Maines, the group’s lead singer and a native Texan, told a London concert audience she was “ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”
Some radio stations have stopped playing the music of the Dixie Chicks and organized events to destroy the group’s CDs and memorabilia.
Moderator’s Comment: Should music retailers follow
the lead of radio stations and stop selling Dixie Chicks’ merchandise?
Consumers may choose not to buy Dixie Chicks’ music. That
is their right.
We’d hate to see retailers remove the group’s music from
store shelves. It would be an act of McCarthyism and that is not the American
way. [George
