Forget Atkins, Have A Grapefruit

By George Anderson

Few businesses have been hurt more by the popularity of the low-carb weight loss craze than the Florida citrus industry.

Now the Florida Department of Citrus is pushing back with a computer-generated spokesperson, a diet of its own and a personal challenge that comes with a $15 gift certificate
on swimwear.

The spokesperson’s name is Gigi. You can check her out for yourself at www.grapefruiteveryday.com.

When you get to the Web site, Gigi will let you in on her weight-loss secret. “You’ll be so amazed how a bit of grapefruit in your diet can help you lose weight.”

Gigi’s weight loss program involves eating half a grapefruit at every meal or one eight-ounce glass of grapefruit juice a day.

Women will be invited to join Gigi in the 90-day Swimsuit Challenge. Those who enter will received a $15 gift certificate to the Everything But Water swimwear chain in Florida.

“If we stick together and commit to the 90-day Swimsuit Challenge, we’ll not only feel like bursting out of our dressing rooms modeling swimsuits, we’ll be ready to hit the beach!”
Gigi says.

Moderator’s Comment: What do you think about the Florida citrus industry’s newest program and previous attempts to
win back low-carb dieters?

The Florida Department of Citrus does have scientific evidence to support the grapefruit diet works. Of course, it doesn’t claim to offer anywhere the amount
of weight loss normally associated with low-carb diet claims.
