Fleming’s Thatcher to Focus on IGA

By George Anderson

Fleming announced that it has named Jim Thatcher, president, Fleming IGA. Mr. Thatcher previously served as president for Fleming Retail’s southern operations. Last month, the wholesaler announced that it was going to divest itself of 110 stores operating as Food 4 Less and Rainbow Foods.

“Fleming is proud to serve more IGA retailers than any other distributor in the country,” said Mr. Thatcher. “IGA retailers represent an important part of our legacy and remains a keystone of our distribution business today.” Fleming serves more than 600 IGA supermarkets in North America.

Dr. Thomas Haggai, chairman and CEO of IGA said, “We are pleased that Jim will be adding his talents and focus to Fleming’s support of the IGA family of owners and operators.”

Moderator’s Comment: What is the current state of IGA
retailers? What does the future look like for the ‘Hometown Proud’ group?

Independents everywhere faced enormous competition from
larger operators. Mr. Thatcher’s background in operations and retailing make
him a good choice for this new role supporting Fleming’s IGA customers. [George
