Dominick’s Downsizes

By George Anderson

Chicago’s Sun Times reports that Dominick’s gave 500 employees pink slips last Thursday.

Wynona Redmond, spokeswoman, Dominick’s told the paper, “Our staffing needs changed, and we didn’t need the level of hours. It’s never an easy decision. It’s never a good time for layoffs but it’s a business necessity for Dominick’s and other employers which are faced with this action.”

The layoffs were announced several weeks after Dominick’s and the United Food and Commercial Workers union came to a temporary agreement to avoid a strike action.

Moderator’s Comment: What is your reaction to the announced
layoffs at Dominick’s?

We understand the need for companies such as Dominick’s
to make these types of decisions but if we were the associates at the chain,
we’d be looking for new union representation. Curiously, the UFCW had no comment
for the Sun Times on the layoffs. [George
