Consumers Don’t Want To Be Bothered

By George Anderson

With more than 10 million phone numbers registered on http://www.donotcall.gov
or called into (888) 382-1222, its clear most consumers don’t want to be
bothered with telemarketing calls.

According to an Associated Press report, the free service intended to block
most telemarketing calls was registering 158 phone numbers every second during
its busiest period since launching last Friday.

Moderator’s Comment: Does the Do-Not-Call list have
implications for marketing methods beyond telemarketing?

Seth Godin has written and talked about the use of interruption
marketing. Marketers bombard consumers with messages hoping theirs will break
through the clutter. The result is consumers are getting more messages than
ever before and either becoming desensitized or annoyed by them in the process.
His solutions are covered in his books Permission Marketing, Unleashing the
Ideavirus
and Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable.
