C&S Wholesale To Close Warehouse

By George Anderson

C&S Wholesale Grocers has said it will close two distribution centers acquired from Supervalu last September.

The closings will include food distribution centers in Cranston, R.I. and Andover, Mass.

Last year, C&S agreed to trade some of its assets in the Midwest for Supervalu holdings in New England. As part of the deal, C&S picked up inventory and distribution
centers in Cranston, Andover, and Suffield, Conn.

Moderator’s Comment: What do you make of C&S Wholesale Grocers’ latest move?

C&S has certainly been busy over the past couple of years with its acquisition of Fleming, asset trade with Supervalu, etc. It would appear as though
C&S acquired the Supervalu properties for the sole purpose of limiting competition in its core Eastern US territory.
