Big Changes at A&P

By George Anderson

Major changes have been announced at A&P including the resignation of Elizabeth Culligan, president and chief operating officer.

A&P has said it is splitting its American and Canadian businesses into separate units with the hope that more focused attention will help the grocery chain’s struggling US business.

Brian Piwek has been appointed as president and chief executive of A&P’s US business. Mr. Piwek was previously the chief executive of A&P Canada.

The new ceo of A&P Canada will be Eric Claus. He is new to the A&P organization having been the president and chief executive of Co-op Atlantic, a Canadian retail and wholesale food company.

Moderator’s Comment: What will the organizational and
executive changes announced at A&P mean to its business?

There are too few women in upper management within the
grocery industry so Elizabeth Culligan’s resignation from A&P is not good
news. She is well regarded within the industry.

Spartan Stores is looking for a top exec to replace Jim
Meyers. the company’s chairman, president and chief executive officer who is
retiring next year. Korn/Ferry International, the search firm hired by Spartan
Stores should give Ms. Culligan a call.
