A Shot of McCafe

By George Anderson

McDonald’s plans to test a coffee bar concept, McCafes, inside designated stores in the US in an attempt to grab a share of the business now being captured by Starbucks, Dunkin’
Donuts and others.

The McCafe concept is new to the US even though it has been in operation for 10 years. The first McCafe opened in Australia in 1993. Today there are approximately “300 McCafe’s
selling espresso-based drinks, chai tea, sandwiches and fancy pastries in 17 countries,” reports Reuters.

McDonald’s plans to open 10 McCafes in the US this year.

Moderator’s Comment: Will McCafes be a success in the US?

The good news is McDonald’s has tested this concept pretty extensively around the world. The bad news is the chain is late to the game here. [George
