Protesters Boost “Boys Are Stupid” Sales

By George Anderson

An Associated Press report says retailers, including Bon-Macy’s and Claire’s Stores, are pulling a line of clothing and accessories critics say are anti-boy.

David & Goliath, based in Clearwater, Fla., manufactures and licenses the “Boys Are…” line that uses humorously anti-boy themes and cartoons to appeal to its core girl audience.

The designer of the merchandise, Todd Goldman, said, “Most people just love the cartoons. If a few people don’t like them, they don’t have to buy them.”

Fortunately for David & Goliath, those who don’t like Mr. Goldman’s designs are not willing to leave the success or failure of the line to market forces.

Glenn Sacks, the host of “His Side,” a weekly radio show that supports men’s rights, has called on his listeners to contact retailers selling the merchandise and remove it from store shelves.

While some stores have removed the merchandise, Mr. Goldman has been pleased with the results of the protest. “It’s the best advertisement I can ask for,” he said. “We’re one of the hottest junior lines out there.”

Moderator’s Comment: Are retailers who pull products off shelves often responding to a vocal and organized minority while neglecting the wishes of a
significant number of shoppers who remain silent?

Having had to explain to our middle school-age daughter on several occasions recently how girls mature more quickly than boys, we can see humor in the “Boys
Are…” line. Of course, we’re only guys, what do we know?
