Delhaize to Close Food Lion and Kash n' Karry Stores

January 10, 2003

By George Anderson

Delhaize plans to close 41 Food Lion locations and one Kash n' Karry store by the end of this month.

Food Lion spokesman Jeff Lowrance told the Raleigh News Observer, "These stores were under-performing, meaning they were just not profitable. So it makes sense to close those."

The company has not yet publicly identified which stores are closing.

Moderator's Comment: What is your reaction to the Delhaize announcement?

It never makes sense to continue operating stores that don't make money. Many of the Food Lion and Kash n' Karry locations that are making money, however, are watching an increasing amount of their customers' dollars going to Wal-Mart and others. [George Anderson - Moderator]
