Department stores lose share to an array of rivals

Department store sales fell from $87.46 billion in 2005 to $60.65 billion last year, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. While department stores have faltered, others including off-price chains (T.J. Maxx), specialty retailers (Victoria’s Secret) and e-commerce sites (Amazon.com) have benefited.
