I'm having a bit of a "Which came first?" moment on this one. The early accounts that I read on this yesterday framed the story as e-Play ceasing operations THUS Walmart and Best Buy getting out of the used gaming business. That would seem more likely than these ...

This is a truly differentiated strategy for H-E-B as other retailers, including Walmart and Target, focus singularly and unapologetically on "mom." Not long ago, I attended an executive presentation in which once again, the mantra was "mom, mom, mom." A guy in the audience jumped up during Q&A and ...

Most (all?) of the research on private brands leaves out one important fact: Shoppers don't always know a private label when they see one. That can be easy for us industry folks to forget as we closely watch every PL launch and line extension; however, the distinction between ...

The noted organizational changes along with Walmart's announcement that Sam's in-store demos will be managed by a single third party provider (Shopper Events) speak to Walmart's ongoing commitment to fostering a more nimble and cross-functional organization globally, online, at HQ, and in-store. To me, the Open Call concept is more relevant as a way to draw young people to the store. If Macy's main goal was to add newness to the store and support up-and-coming designers, a designer casting call would not be necessary. After all, these days, there are ...

I'm watching the outlet world closely, particularly as it goes through its own consolidation process (world's largest outlet operator, Simon Property Group's $2.3 billion acquisition of Prime Outlets back in December). Tying this into my comments in the discussion on Target, the formidable Simon, with its international reach, big ...

All of these moves feel like a big case of catch-up. Necessary and overdue, but still "me-too." In a blog post last September, I expressed concern over the yawn-snore that retail has become as retailers' focus lingers on correcting errors rather than making the store environment ...
